The Godfather

1. Relate what was discuss in class or in text to the screening.
The Godfather, which came to screen in 1972, was not only one of the best movies to play in the 70’s but arguably one of the best movies of all time. Based of the novel Puzo this movie was directed by Francis Ford Coppola and starred big name people like Al Pacino, Marlon Brando, James Caan etc. This movie has a anti hero plot and shows value for gangster family and they life style.

2. Find a related article and summarize the content.
http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/443184/The-Godfather/articles.html

In this article they talk about the summary of the godfather and how it touches on money, loyalty, family, greed, power, values, violence, etc. they also talk about how Frank chose to direct this film for all the wrong reasons. Frank chose to direct the film for Paramount’s Film because in was in a financial debt with previous film project disappointments. Then they talk about how they scooped out some place that would be good to shoot for the film and the auditions process actors and actress.

3. Apply article to the film screened in class.
I like how this film turn out to be great. I think a large part of that was because people had so much to prove and on the line as stated in this article. The director felt the pressure to have a great movie and that was do to the fact he was in a financial crisis and you had plenty of actor like Al Pacino who use this movie to boost their career to the next level.

4. Write a critical analysis to the film.
This by far is probably one of the best movies we saw in this class and I see why this was save for last. I like how this movie path the way as a platform for gangster movies You find yourself rooting for the bad guy even though in the movie you wouldn’t consider them as the bad guy because of the lifestyle they were living. The casting crew was great and you can see the chemistry between them. I wish that some of the women were mentally strong and more independent but I feel that why the movie is great because it makes it realistic of how women were seen during that time frame with that kind of lifestyle they were living.

1. Relate what was discuss in class or in text to the screening.
Mike Nichols brought the Graduate, which was based off a novel by Charles Webb, to the screen in 1967. The movie is a drama with a little comedy towards it and it’s reaches out to the younger audience because of the character and their rebellious roles.

2. Find a related article and summarize content.

In this article its starts off by giving a summary about the movie where Benjamin graduate from college and is confuses about what his next move is. Then he gets into an affair with his father business partner wife (Mrs. Robinson). Then he is hit with another roadblock when he rekindles his lost relationship with Mrs. Robinson ‘s Daughter Elaine.
They also talk about how this movie was iconic to all culture and generation and memorable moments from the movie like the seen with Mr. Robinson and Benjamin when they were in his house.

3. Apply the article to the film in class.
We forget how different our mindset can be between to generation and how it effects us in our everyday lives. The article really stresses how this movie is great for all crowd because it can be related from the different character from the movie.

4. Write a critical analysis about the movie.
First off the movie was shot and edited with all the different shots and angels. Like the scene when Benjamin is in the room and they have the over the shoulder shot where he looking out the window and the fish bowl shot. Also the scene at the end when Benjamin crashes Elaine wedding was also a great scene. I like how the movie can relate with all crowds through the character. Many young adults can relate to getting out of college and not knowing their next move. Many of the older adults can relate to being in a situation that was force upon them. When you combine those two you will get those results some times that transpire in the movie. I thought overall this was a great movie.

Citizen Kane

1. Relate what was discuss in class or in text to the screening.
This week we watch Citizen Kane, which was produce and directed by Orson Welles. This film was about the life of Charles Foster Kane who was also played by Orson. The film was based off of William Randolph Hearst life and in the movie you having numerous a people talking and telling their version of Charles life. They go back down memory lane to try and understand the deeper meaning of “Rosebud”.

2. Find a related article and summarize content.

http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/89/Citizen-Kane/articles.html

In this article they start off by giving a brief description of the movie and what it is about. Then they discuss the controversy that went on behind the scenes. It was stated that Welles wanted to take all the acknowledgement and accolades from this film as far as screen writing for this film goes. It actuality Welles got assistance from Herman J. Mankiwiecz and John Houseman. They go on to talk about fun facts, awards they were nominated and receive from this film, and other behind the scene works.

3. Apply the article to the film in class.
The whole movie is about controversy to me, which you can, see fits right into the movie. This movie was ahead of its time with camera angles to make Charles seem like a man with power, to the acting, screen writing etc. you can tell this is a movie about William Hearst life wants you do a little research.

4. Write a critical analysis of the film.

I like this movie, which is kind of strange because I’m not a big fan of black and white movies but this was pretty good. I like how he uses different shots and camera angle to really get those intense moments. Like the scene when his woman leaves him for good then he start to trash the place. Then all of a sudden it’s a wide shot where everyone see him lose it and he jus calmly walks away. I thought that was a great scene. I’m shock that for all those awards they were nominated for they only won one.

Gone With The Wind

1. Relate what was discuss in class or in text to the screening.
We just recently watch Gone With The Wind, which was directed by Victor Fleming and George Cukor. This was an historical romance film and it was based off from Margret Mitchell novel in 1936. This film is so popular because it broke down so many barriers. One of the biggest barriers it broke down was the color barrier where African American had a chance to play in a serious role for a film. This movie touches on war, heartbreak, love, race, death, etc. People have debate that this movie is one of the all time favorite love stories.

2. Find a relate article and summarize content:
http://www.thehistorychannelclub.com/articles/articletype/articleview/articleid/346/gone-with-the-wind
In this article they talk about the summary of the movie and how this movie effect decades later. They talk about Margret Mitchell and how she came about writing the novel for Gone With The Wind. They say that she wanted to given the southern perspective of what happen in their series of events in the south during that time. They also talk about how this film talked race and how it path the way for the film industry to take African Americans more serious.

3. Apply the article to the film in class.
I like how in the article they talk about how this movie help challenge and change some of the stuff that was going on at that time in the film industry. They talk about what we talk about in class about how you really don’t see any war scene because to an extent that not what the movie is about. The movie is about during and the aftermath of the civil war and how each character in the film is effect by it in their day-to-day lives.

4. Write a critical analysis of the film.
My overall opinion of the film is that I love everything that the film had to offer but I didn’t like the film too much. I think the cast that they had for this movie was great and you can see from watching the film that they work well with one another. I love the editing and the color of the film because you can really see there was an improvement in technology to make for a better appealing film visually. I even love how this film how the film industry in regards to race because from this film it brought the pressure for other director to start taking African American more serious and not just put them in a generic role during the time. The story line I didn’t care for because I wasn’t into the storyline too much. The longer the film went on the harder it was for me to be intrigued with it. I do like that it wasn’t a happy ending because I think during that time it made for a more realistic outcome. I just felt it was so much going on with each character that it was hard to keep up with.

It Happen One Night

1. Relate what we discuss in class or text to the screen.

It Happen One Night was a film directed and produce by Frank Capra in 1934. This film genre was a romantic comedy and part of the reason why this film was so popular because it path the way for screwball comedy which is basically a clash between male and females for dominance within a relationship in a comical way. In class we talk about how in this film they showed their version of censorship and how they shot around nudity in a way where it doesn’t give the feeling of it being cheeses. We also talk about how women are portrayed during that time period and this film help women deal with their love life without being influence by others.

2. Find an article and summarize the content.

http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/12648/It-Happened-One-Night/articles.html
In this article they talk about what the movie is about and how this movie path the wavy for screwball comedy. It talks about the struggle Frank face with finding the leading lady role for Elle because no actresses believe this movie would be that great. It also talks about how this film affects society and the clothing industry.

3. Apply the article to the film screen in class.

One of the things I was shock to see in the article was how they were discussion about the scene when Gable got undressed in the motel. The reason why that scene was so significant was because when he was getting undress he didn’t have an undershirt on so he was bare skin. So when the audience saw that the undershirt industry hit a major decline in sales because nobody wanted to wear undershirts. Also in that scene how you can show a male and female getting undressed without showing nudity and obey by the censorship regulation. That scene alone showed the blueprint of working around censorship. Also we discuss how this film was way before its time and it showed when it came for casting the female role because a lot of women turned it down. The only reason Claudette took it because it paid more money then what she was currently getting because she was reluctant also with the role. That was due to the fact that she did a film with Frank before and it wasn’t successful.

4. Write a critical analysis of the film.

This was a really good film and like how this film was really ahead of it’s time. The message I got from it was that women could find true love without having someone find true love for them. How they work away around censorship with the scene of them getting undress and having the sheet to symbolize the boundaries. How it shows the obstacles that Peter and Elle face on their journey and how they found themselves with each other at the end. How Elle was introduced to a different lifestyle and grew out of her little bubble that she only knew. With a black a white film it was filled with so much light with close up, and shooting at the right angle to get emotion. For instance when Pete is driving back in town to proposed to Elle and he realize that he got pick up and traveling back and he tries to catch her but he runs out of gas. Or the chief editors sense of urgency when he realize he probably got scammed and everybody starts working franticly. Overall it was a great film by Frank Capra

The Gold Rush

1. Relate what was discuss in class or text to the screening

The Gold Rush was a silent film that was produce, written, directed and starred by Charlie Chaplin. This film was released in 1925. In class we discussed about how Charlie use this film to relay a bigger message. Like for example how women are portray in this movie because Georgia was looked upon as a women who went after men of wealth but as we got to the end of the movie you saw what great character she had when she help out the tramp. Also the Tramp who was played by Charlie portrays himself with someone who wasn’t the wealthiest or the most popular one but he had a big heart. We discuss how they were able to capture certain shots and film from certain angles that would bring out the emotions and feelings of the movie without using words and without the right equipment or like of funds to do so.

2. Find an article and summarize the content.

http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/5779/The-Gold-Rush/articles.html
In this article it talks about the storyline of how the movie plays out. He talks about the key character in the film, what role they played in the film and which actor/actress played that character. They also talk about the inspirations behind Charlie and why he chose to do this film.

3. Apply the article to the film screen in class
One of the most interesting to me was how Charlie chose his inspirations for this film. In the article the discuss how Charlie was intrigue about Donner and her serious of events she face. In 1846 she was traveling in the U.S. during the snow and during her travel she had to resort to cannibalism just show she wouldn’t die from starvation. In the Gold Rush he reenacts that scene by having 3 strangers trapped in a cabin during the snowstorm wit no food in the cabin. It was said in the article that he also shot that scene close to where Donner was stranded. Also i was surprise how much the film actually cost to make because in class we talk about him not having the proper technology for the film and that he had to find other ways to get the results he wanted. In the article the film was said to cost over $900,000.

4. Write a critical analysis of the film
This was my first film every watching with any sound and I was surprise that I was intrigued in the film. Part of the reason for that was how Charlie uses certain shots to help out with the emotion and feeling of each scene. Like the scene when the cabin was falling of the hill and he keep showing back and forth of the blizzard and the cabin hanging on for dear life on the rope. How Charlie capture on film the fear of him trying to get out of that with a comical approach. Or the scene when he was waiting for Georgia and her girls to come over for the New Years Eve dinner and him daydreaming of how the night was suppose to go. Then it goes back to reality and you can feel the depression that he feels when he realizes that they are not coming. Both of those scenes I felt he did a great job to reach out to his audience without speaking a word in the film.
