It Happen One Night

1. Relate what we discuss in class or text to the screen.

It Happen One Night was a film directed and produce by Frank Capra in 1934. This film genre was a romantic comedy and part of the reason why this film was so popular because it path the way for screwball comedy which is basically a clash between male and females for dominance within a relationship in a comical way. In class we talk about how in this film they showed their version of censorship and how they shot around nudity in a way where it doesn’t give the feeling of it being cheeses. We also talk about how women are portrayed during that time period and this film help women deal with their love life without being influence by others.

2. Find an article and summarize the content.

In this article they talk about what the movie is about and how this movie path the wavy for screwball comedy. It talks about the struggle Frank face with finding the leading lady role for Elle because no actresses believe this movie would be that great. It also talks about how this film affects society and the clothing industry.

3. Apply the article to the film screen in class.

One of the things I was shock to see in the article was how they were discussion about the scene when Gable got undressed in the motel. The reason why that scene was so significant was because when he was getting undress he didn’t have an undershirt on so he was bare skin. So when the audience saw that the undershirt industry hit a major decline in sales because nobody wanted to wear undershirts. Also in that scene how you can show a male and female getting undressed without showing nudity and obey by the censorship regulation. That scene alone showed the blueprint of working around censorship. Also we discuss how this film was way before its time and it showed when it came for casting the female role because a lot of women turned it down. The only reason Claudette took it because it paid more money then what she was currently getting because she was reluctant also with the role. That was due to the fact that she did a film with Frank before and it wasn’t successful.

4. Write a critical analysis of the film.

This was a really good film and like how this film was really ahead of it’s time. The message I got from it was that women could find true love without having someone find true love for them. How they work away around censorship with the scene of them getting undress and having the sheet to symbolize the boundaries. How it shows the obstacles that Peter and Elle face on their journey and how they found themselves with each other at the end. How Elle was introduced to a different lifestyle and grew out of her little bubble that she only knew. With a black a white film it was filled with so much light with close up, and shooting at the right angle to get emotion. For instance when Pete is driving back in town to proposed to Elle and he realize that he got pick up and traveling back and he tries to catch her but he runs out of gas. Or the chief editors sense of urgency when he realize he probably got scammed and everybody starts working franticly. Overall it was a great film by Frank Capra
